Mat vs Reformer Pilates Teacher Training: Which Should You Do First?

One of the most common questions I get from students in Dubai — usually after a few WhatsApp messages back and forth — is this: should I do my Mat certification first, or jump straight into Reformer?

It's a good question. And there's no single right answer.

What I can tell you is that the right starting point depends on three things: what kind of teaching you want to do, what equipment you have access to, and how the Dubai studio market actually works right now. Get those three things clear in your head, and the decision becomes a lot easier.

Here's an honest comparison of Mat vs Reformer Pilates certification — written from over a decade of teaching Pilates in the UAE and from the conversations I keep having with students trying to choose between these two pathways.

What Mat and Reformer Training Actually Cover

Before comparing them, it helps to understand what each pathway actually teaches you — and what comes before both of them.

Movement Principles & Pilates Essentials is the mandatory starting course for every Balanced Body® student in Dubai, regardless of which pathway you choose. It introduces the core movement principles, anatomy fundamentals, and the teaching framework that underpins the entire Balanced Body® system. You take it before Mat 1 and before Reformer 1 — so whichever direction you go, this is your starting point. It runs over a weekend and is priced at AED 2,793 early bird / AED 3,293 full, including manuals and VAT.

Mat Pilates teacher training focuses on the original Pilates mat repertoire — exercises performed on the floor using bodyweight, breath, control, precision, and spinal articulation as the foundation. While Joseph Pilates' original work was not based on props, modern Mat teaching may also include small props such as magic circles, balls, or bands to support, challenge, or modify the work. The Balanced Body® Mat Pathway covers Mat 1, 2, and 3, taking you from foundational movement principles to more advanced Mat repertoire. A certified Mat instructor can teach in studios, gyms, private settings, or online.

Reformer Pilates teacher training focuses on the Reformer — the spring-loaded apparatus that most people picture when they think of modern Pilates. The Reformer offers resistance, support, and a huge range of movement options that aren't possible on the Mat. Balanced Body® Reformer 1, 2, and 3 takes you through the full repertoire, including how to programme for beginners, intermediates, and advanced clients.

Both are complete qualifications in their own right. Neither is a "stepping stone" to the other — they're two different skill sets that overlap but aren't interchangeable. The Movement Principles & Pilates Essentials course is the common foundation that prepares you for either path.

Which One Is More in Demand in Dubai Right Now

Let's be direct: if you want to work in a Dubai studio, Reformer is where the demand is.

Walk into almost any boutique Pilates studio in Dubai — and the same is true across Abu Dhabi, Riyadh, and Doha — and you'll see banks of Reformers. The studio model in the GCC has been built around group Reformer classes, which are what clients pay premium prices for. Most studio hiring conversations I hear about start with "do you teach Reformer?"

Mat classes still happen, of course, and there's a real market for Mat work — especially in corporate wellness, private sessions, and online teaching. But if your goal is to walk into a Dubai studio and get hours on the schedule quickly, a Reformer qualification will open more doors faster.

If you've read my breakdown of how to become a certified Pilates instructor in Dubai, you'll already know I push students to be honest about their goal before choosing a path. This is exactly the kind of decision that should be driven by your actual plan, not by what sounds more impressive.

Which One Earns More

This is the question nobody quite wants to ask out loud, so let me answer it plainly.

In Dubai, Reformer instructors generally earn more per hour than Mat-only instructors. Group Reformer classes are among the most profitable services most studios offer, and instructors who can deliver those classes confidently are often paid accordingly. A newly certified Reformer instructor in Dubai can typically expect studio rates that are approximately 30–50% higher than Mat-only group class rates.

Ultimately, income depends not only on the certification pathway, but also on the instructor's experience, teaching quality, specialization, professionalism, and ability to retain clients. Your business model matters too: studio employee, freelancer, educator, or private practitioner. Reformer tends to generate higher studio-based income, while Mat can compete strongly — and sometimes outperform — in private and online settings.

The Case for Starting with Mat

There's a genuine argument for doing Mat 1 first, and it's not just about cost.

Mat teaches you to see the body and to teach without the safety net of the apparatus. When you only have the floor, your eye for alignment, your verbal cueing, and your understanding of how exercises actually work in the body all sharpen quickly. Many of the best Reformer teachers I know — the ones who really understand what they're doing — started on the Mat.

Mat training is also more accessible. You don't need access to a Reformer to practise between modules. You can teach friends, family, or pilot small classes immediately after your first module. The entry investment is lower, which means you can test whether teaching is genuinely for you before committing to the full Reformer pathway.

For students who want a foundation that will make every subsequent course easier, Mat 1 is a strong starting point.

The Case for Starting with Reformer

Other students should skip straight to Reformer 1, and I'll tell them so honestly.

If you're already an experienced Pilates practitioner — say, three or more years of consistent practice on Mat and Reformer — your body already understands the principles. Starting with Reformer 1 gets you into the apparatus that the Dubai market is hiring for, faster.

If you have a clear timeline (visa renewal, career change deadline, a specific studio you want to apply to), Reformer 1 is the more direct route to initial employability. The course itself runs over a weekend — 16 hours of contact teaching — and once you complete it, you have the credential to apply for studio work as a Reformer Level 1 Instructor, which qualifies you to teach beginner and intermediate-level classes. To be clear: this is the first level. Becoming a truly experienced, polished Reformer instructor — one ready to handle advanced clients, complex bodies, and full programming confidently — takes years of teaching after that. Reformer 1 isn't the finish line. It's the first concrete step on the path.

And if you already work in a fitness or healthcare profession — personal training, physiotherapy, sports coaching — the Reformer's resistance work translates immediately into your existing practice. Many of my physiotherapist students come straight to Reformer for this reason.

What I Tell Students Who Ask Me Directly

Here's my honest recommendation, the one I give over WhatsApp before students sign up.

If you have the time, budget, and a long-term plan to teach professionally in Dubai, do Mat 1 first, then Reformer 1 within the same year. You'll become a better teacher, gain a stronger movement foundation, and develop a more complete skill set when applying to studios.

If you have a tight timeline or limited budget and need to start earning quickly: go directly to Reformer 1. You can always add Mat afterwards — and many students do.

If you're a physiotherapist, athlete, or fitness coach already working in the industry: Reformer 1 first, almost always. The apparatus work integrates faster with what you already do.

If your goal is a complete, internationally portable Pilates qualification, commit to the Comprehensive Pathway from the beginning: Mat 1, 2, 3, Reformer 1, 2, 3, Trapeze Table, and Pilates Chair — the full Balanced Body® education system. It's one of the most thorough and globally recognized Pilates education pathways available in the UAE.

One important point I make sure every student understands before they start: alongside the pathway courses, Movement Principles & Pilates Essentials is mandatory, and so is an Anatomy course — taken directly with Balanced Body® or an equivalent recognised anatomy training. The Anatomy course is not taught by any GCC-based Educator (including me); students complete it through Balanced Body® directly or through another approved provider. Both Movement Principles and Anatomy are required for full certification, so factor them into your plan and your budget from day one.

What the Balanced Body® Pathway Actually Looks Like

Whichever route you choose, the Balanced Body® system is modular — which means you can build your certification step by step rather than committing to everything at once.

Each module is taught over a weekend of intensive contact teaching (Reformer 1, for example, is 16 hours), followed by a self-practice and observation period before your assessment. The pathway is designed to be built progressively, not rushed. All Balanced Body® course prices in Dubai include manuals and VAT, with no hidden fees. Early bird pricing is available for students who register ahead of the deadline.

The international recognition of Balanced Body® goes well beyond any regional body — it's NCPT eligible, accepted in over 70 countries, and recognised by Dubai studios across the city. You can see the full course schedule and current pricing on the upcoming courses page.
