From Pilates Teacher to Pilates Educator: The Journey That Transformed How I Teach Movement

After many years of teaching Pilates, becoming a Pilates educator felt like a natural evolution — but not for the reasons people might expect. It wasn't about teaching more classes or collecting another certification. It came from a deeper belief: that movement should always have meaning and create lasting change. If you're somewhere on the path toward becoming a Pilates educator in Dubai yourself, or simply curious about what that journey actually looks like, I want to share mine honestly.

‍ ‍

I've never seen Pilates as simply completing exercises. I see movement as a powerful tool to support what your body truly needs — whether that means reducing discomfort, building strength, moving with confidence, or enjoying everyday life with greater ease. That perspective transformed not only the way I teach, but also the way I guide and mentor future instructors here in the UAE.

‍ ‍

Why Becoming a Pilates Educator Changed Everything

‍ ‍

For a long time, I thought of teaching and educating as the same thing. They're not. Teaching a class is about guiding the person in front of you through a session that serves their body that day. Educating future instructors is about something larger — passing on not just what to teach, but how to think, observe and adapt for every body that will ever walk into their studio.

‍ ‍

That shift changed everything for me. As a Balanced Body® Master Educator based in Dubai, my role is no longer only to deliver great sessions; it's to shape the teachers who will go on to deliver thousands of them across the GCC. Once you feel the weight and the privilege of that, you can't teach the same way again. Every cue, every progression, every explanation becomes something you're modelling for the next generation of instructors.

‍ ‍

Why Understanding the "Why" Matters

‍ ‍

One of the biggest lessons Pilates taught me is that exercises are never random. Every sequence has intention. Every progression has a purpose. As instructors, we are not simply delivering exercises — we are creating experiences that support people in their own movement journey.

‍ ‍

That is why understanding the why became so important to me. Why this exercise? Why this sequence? Why now? When you can answer those questions, you stop being someone who runs through a routine and become someone who genuinely teaches. And when something unexpected happens in a session — a client with a sore shoulder, a body that can't find a position, a movement that simply isn't working that day — the why is what lets you adapt with confidence instead of freezing. That's the difference between memorising choreography and truly understanding movement.

‍ ‍

How Movement Principles Changed the Way I Teach

‍ ‍

Movement principles helped me understand movement beyond memorisation. Instead of learning what to teach, I started understanding why we teach it. Foundational positions. Movement patterns. Progression. Function. Building from support into integration.

‍ ‍

This is the heart of how Balanced Body® approaches teacher training, and it's the part I care about most as an educator. When you understand the principles underneath an exercise, you're no longer dependent on a fixed list of moves. You can read the body in front of you, choose the right starting point, and build from there. Understanding movement this way creates more adaptable, thoughtful and confident instructors — the kind of teachers studios in Dubai and across the Gulf actually want to hire, because they can handle whoever walks through the door.

‍ ‍

From Teaching Movement to Educating Future Teachers

‍ ‍

Becoming a Pilates educator gave me the opportunity to share more than exercises. My goal is not to create instructors who memorise choreography. My goal is to support teachers in understanding movement deeply enough that they can adapt, observe, communicate and teach with confidence. Because when people understand movement, they stop copying and start teaching.

‍ ‍

This is also why mentorship matters so much to me. A certification is a beginning, not an ending. The real growth happens in those first months of teaching, when a new instructor meets bodies and situations no course could fully prepare them for. Walking alongside teachers through that stage — through my mentorship programme — is some of the most meaningful work I do. I've lived the journey from teacher to educator, and being able to shorten the path for someone else feels like the natural extension of everything Pilates has given me.

‍ ‍

My own background plays into this more than I expected it might. As a former professional athlete and member of the Colombian national volleyball team, I learned early how much the quality of coaching shapes an athlete's career. The right guidance at the right moment changes everything. I bring that same belief to teacher training — that how you're taught matters just as much as what you're taught.

‍ ‍

Pilates as a Tool — Not Just a Workout

‍ ‍

Whether someone comes to Pilates to reduce discomfort, improve strength, return after pregnancy, support athletic performance, or simply reconnect with movement — I believe the system should support their individual pathway. It's not a fixed workout you impose on a body; it's a tool you shape around a person.

‍ ‍

That belief is exactly what I hope to pass on to every instructor I train. Movement with purpose. Understanding with intention. Results that translate into everyday life. When a teacher carries that mindset into a studio in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or anywhere across the GCC, their clients feel the difference immediately — because the work is built around them, not around a script.
